What Does a Healthy AV Fistula Look
Like?
AV Fistula
Arteriovenous (AV) fistulas are aberrant connections between
an artery and a vein. Blood typically travels from your arteries through your
capillaries and veins. Oxygen and nutrients from your capillaries move through
your blood to the tissues in your body.
Signs and
symptoms of an AV fistula include
·
Through their skin, a person can see purple,
protruding veins that resemble varicose veins.
·
either the arms or legs are swollen.
·
Lower blood pressure begins to occur
·
A person frequently feels worn out
·
Heart failure is highly probable.
How Long
Until My AV Fistula Heals and Maturates?
Your fistula
must fully recover and mature (grow or enlarge) before you can start receiving
dialysis treatment. An AV fistula can mature and mend in a few weeks to a few
months, depending on the individual. The average number of days it takes in the
US for an AV fistula to be used for the first time is 133, or around 4 months.
1 Your fistula will likely change in appearance as it matures and heals.
Complications
An arteriovenous fistula can lead to consequences if left
untreated. Some issues could be very serious. These consist of:
·
Heart Attack-The most severe issue with big
arteriovenous fistulas is this. An arteriovenous fistula allows blood to flow
more swiftly than through regular blood veins.
·
Clots of Blood-Blood clots may develop in the
legs as a result of an arteriovenous fistula. A disorder known as deep vein
thrombosis may result from blood clots in the legs (DVT). DVT can be fatal if
the blood clot gets to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
·
Leg pain from a blood flow issue (claudication)
-Leg pain might result from an arteriovenous fistula blocking blood flow to
muscles.
·
Internal Bleeding - Intestinal and stomach
bleeding may result from arteriovenous fistulas.
